4 U.S. Cities With Fresh James Beard Best Chef Winners

By Beatus Mídias · Published September 2026 · 7 min read

Direct answer: New Orleans, San Juan, Minneapolis and Oklahoma City each have a current James Beard Foundation Best Chef winner, spanning four distinct regional categories and four distinct food stories. None of it is marketing spin, it comes straight from the Foundation's own award history.

New Orleans: the 2026 Best Chef: South

Chef Serigne Mbaye of Dakar NOLA won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef: South award in 2026. The restaurant is confirmed currently operating, part of a food scene that Louisiana's own 2025 MICHELIN Guide addition (3 starred restaurants statewide) has also started recognizing.

San Juan: a historic first for Puerto Rico

Chef Natalia Vallejo of Cocina al Fondo, in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan, won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef: South award in 2023. Per the restaurant's own site, she was the first Puerto Rican chef to receive a James Beard designation, a genuine milestone for the island's dining scene.

Minneapolis: two restaurants, one Best Chef

Chef Christina Nguyen, of Hai Hai and Hola Arepa in Minneapolis, won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef: Midwest award in 2024. Running two distinct, celebrated restaurants at once and still landing a regional Best Chef title says something about consistency, not a single lucky night in the kitchen.

Oklahoma City: a fine-dining statement

Chef Andrew Black of Grey Sweater won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef: Southwest award in 2023. The restaurant's own site now describes itself as "the Best Oklahoma City Fine Dining Restaurant by James Beard Chef Andrew Black," a title earned, not claimed.

A Best Chef title doesn't fill tables by itself

A James Beard win gets a city's food scene noticed nationally. It doesn't automatically get any single restaurant a table on a Tuesday night. That still takes a real paid traffic strategy pointed at your own ordering channel, not a marketplace listing.
