Wichita: two years, two firsts

In 2025, Georges French Bistro became the first restaurant in Wichita's history to be named a James Beard Award semifinalist. Wichita didn't stop there: in 2026, FioRito Ristorante followed with a Best Chef: Midwest nod, according to Visit Wichita, the city's official tourism office. Two consecutive years of national recognition, after a history of none, is real momentum.

Louisville: the same chef, three years running

Louisville has landed a James Beard semifinalist chef for Best Chef: Southeast three years in a row. Dallas McGarity, of The Fat Lamb, made the list in 2024. Noam Bilitzer, of MeeshMeesh Mediterranean, followed in both 2025 and 2026, according to the James Beard Foundation's own official announcements. Consistency like that signals a food scene that keeps producing, not a one-off.

Albuquerque: four categories, one city

Albuquerque placed four different establishments among the 2026 James Beard semifinalists, spread across four categories: The Burque Bakehouse (Outstanding Bakery), Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. (Outstanding Bar), Daydream Rum Bar (Best New Bar), and chef Steve Riley of Mesa Provisions (Best Chef: Southwest). That breadth, per the Foundation's official list, means it's not one standout carrying the city — it's a scene.
