3 U.S. Cities With James Beard Award-Winning Chefs Right Now
Savannah: the Foundation's top individual honor
Chef Mashama Bailey of The Grey won the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef: Southeast award in 2019, then went on to win the Foundation's Outstanding Chef award in 2022, its highest individual honor, awarded nationally rather than by region. Savannah's food identity runs deeper than one chef too: Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room, open since 1943, is a James Beard America's Classics winner still drawing lines daily.
Charleston: two classics plus a Best Chef
Charleston has landed a James Beard Best Chef: Southeast winner of its own, Mike Lata of FIG, in 2009: on top of two James Beard America's Classics winners: Bowen's Island Restaurant (open since 1946, honored in 2006) and Bertha's Kitchen (open since 1980, honored in 2017). Three separate James Beard recognitions, spanning three different eras of the city's food scene, is a real and layered track record.
St. Louis: a brand-new 2026 winner
Chef Loryn Nalic of Balkan Treat Box won the James Beard Foundation's 2026 Best Chef: Midwest award, announced in June 2026, the first win in that category for the St. Louis area since 2017. St. Louis also has deep roots on The Hill neighborhood, home to Gioia's Deli, a James Beard America's Classics winner since 2017 and still serving its famous hot salami today.
